Edmonton – 2025-01-31 – Wenzel Downhole Tools (WZL), the world’s leading manufacturer of quality downhole drilling tools, is pleased to announce the addition of titanium full-flex driveshaft options to its lineup of mud motors and accessories.
Primarily used in the aerospace industry as a high-performance material in advanced applications, titanium is prized for its high strength-to-weight ratio, ductility and reliability under stress. It is also trusted by the medical industry for use in prostheses, implants and surgical instruments where strength, weight and long-term durability are priorities.
In downhole drilling applications, these properties allow titanium driveshafts to be shorter and lighter than their steel counterparts while offering the same degree of flex. Additionally, titanium is highly resistant to corrosion—and that has our engineers very excited.
“Titanium offers ultimate chemical resistance,” says Jordan James, WZL VP of Engineering. “Particularly in high-brine scenarios, titanium’s anti-corrosion properties will allow it to reliably perform at a very high level with endurance.”
Not all shops are equipped to machine titanium, and we are mindful of our customers’ need to service and maintain our tools at their facilities. To give customers that flexibility, our engineers designed a full-flex, single-piece titanium shaft that is shrink-fit into threaded steel hubs. When properly assembled and cooled, the hubs and shaft become one rigid driveshaft that is connected directly to rotor and bearing assembly (see design below).

In addition to providing serviceability, the steel hubs benefit from steel having a higher yield and tensile strength than titanium. Customers get the best of both worlds—the lightweight, highly ductile, corrosion-resistant reliability of titanium in the flex shaft, and durable high-torque steel connections.
